For centuries, the Conversos—Jews of Spain and Portugal who were forced to convert to Christianity and their descendants—lived at the intersection of different religions, cultures, and identities.

This four-part series traces their remarkable history from the mass conversions of late medieval Spain through the Inquisition and the secret preservation of Jewish memory to the emergence of openly Jewish communities in Amsterdam, London, the Ottoman Empire, Brazil, and the Atlantic world.

At the heart of the series are people and families. Alongside the great events of Converso history, we will encounter individuals, famous and largely forgotten, whose lives reveal the profoundly personal dimensions of conversion, persecution, concealment, migration, and the return to Judaism.
